scope:

under general supervision, the cad designer ii will complete product layouts and prepare assembly and detail drawings.  using charts, tables and material specifications, this position will analyze assemblies for tolerance stack-ups and weights, as well as prepare bills of material and specifications as required. this position will also develop unique mechanical designs under engineering and operations guidance and support.

key responsibilities & essential functions:

  • create moderate to complex designs, layouts, assembly drawings and detail drawings for new or existing products, special machinery designs, test equipment, tools, fixtures and gauge designs.
  • understand moderate to complex mechanical and electromechanical systems and schematics.
  • analyze various design requirements and recommend possible solutions or alternate constructions.
  • generate solid model renditions or 3d printer models to facilitate marketing and sales requirements.
  • prepare all drawings and drawing changes in accordance with divisional and regulatory standards and procedures.
  • evaluate materials, parts and products for use in new and existing designs.
  • prepare written reports, presentations, etc. as needed to fulfill assignments.
  • initiate changes requested for documentation changes or releases.
  • implement design changes through the dentsply sirona quality & regulatory systems.
  • assist with managing project drawing and documentation packages for new product development.
  • complete geometric tolerancing analysis and present findings to engineering and operations staff.
  • plan and prepare preliminary layouts and detailed design drawings from engineering notes, sketches, and/or other drawings, ensuring they meet company, industry and regulatory standards and codes as applicable.
  •  participate in cross functional teams through investigation of new product ideas and failure analysis. 
  • recommend cost saving initiatives for new materials, new designs or assembly procedures to engineering and operations teams.
  • provide information for design review and support the engineering staff as needed.
  • all other duties as assigned.
  • knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • general to proficient drafting skills with 2-d modeling software such as autocad and 3-d modeling software such as solidworks strongly preferred.
  • experience transitioning from design concept to finished design, including layouts and tolerance variations and detail drawings. 
  • strong mathematical aptitude with ability to complete basic mathematical calculations.
  • familiarity with electrical and mechanical components and symbols. 
  • solid understanding of drafting techniques.
  • basic to moderate skills at designing, developing and conducting test parameters and protocols. 
  • ability to evaluate electromechanical systems, as well as read and interpret schematics and drawings. 
  • strong communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • proficient with ms office suite (word, excel, powerpoint, etc.)
  • able to read and understand technical information, i.e. service manuals, schematics, adjustment procedures, etc.
  • strong organization and project management skills.
  •  

    education & experience:

  • high school diploma or ged required.
  • trade school education in mechanical drawing with course work and experience in computer aided drafting and design preferred.
  • associate’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field a plus.
  • 3-5 years experience in mechanical design preferred.
