we are looking to recruit a team lead to join our team at sparrows.

the position entails responsibility for the assigned project team, comprising a mixture of personnel including, senior project engineers, project engineers & graduate/trainee engineers. responsibilities include; business promotion & establishment, business administration and engineering support under the direction of the general manager. assist general manager with the day-to-day management of the team. guide and mentor others with knowledge and expertise, strengthen and maintain relationships, support financial/contract management, quality orientation, safety leadership and continuous development in all aspects of the ad-hoc service offering provided by the engineering services group.

reporting directly to the industrial general manager, the position will demand close liaison with client-facing support teams and/or other engineering team leads/business managers and where necessary other contracts/support teams, (typically comprising business manager, contract manager, account manager, contract support engineer, etc) in order to ensure that enquiries and projects generated via the contract (or other ad-hoc work) is allocated and processed within the project team. prioritisation and sharing of workload will be performed in conjunction with the industrial team, and where appropriate, the industrial general manager.

the incumbent will be expected to handle some enquiries and projects and will therefore write time within the job costing system. whilst the administrative portion of the role will demand a significant percentage of working hours, this time is to be allocated to enquiries and projects that are being processed by the project team.

main responsibilities

enquiry preparation:

the position entails the successful management, co-ordination, allocation and control of personnel who will be required to process industrial services enquiries in accordance with company procedures and guidelines.

this will require an understanding of the methodology of enquiry processing and includes participation with and guiding team members in the following stages:

• evaluation of contract type and strategy

• bid planning

• development of scopes of work

• production of execution plans

• production of work breakdown structure

• estimating and ctr production

• proposal formatting and collation

• submission review and approval.

project activity:

the position necessitates the co-ordination, planning and prioritisation of the projects undertaken by the industrial teams in accordance with company procedures and guidelines. projects will be received via proposals, sales teams and other sources. the project activity relates to those projects/workscopes processed by the assigned project team.

in this instance, success is measured by attainment of business plan turnover and profit and the delivery of projects to safety and quality standards.

the position requires an understanding of the following stages of project management:

• project planning

• contract review

• financial control

• design / technical review

• manufacture and refurbishment

• workpack preparation and review

• implementation

• project close out.

personnel:

it is expected that the incumbent will demonstrate leadership and promote training and development of subordinates. in this respect they are required to lead innovation and to initiate continuous improvement in a people business.

the incumbent will actively provide project guidance and mentoring to others to promote competence and ensure successful delivery of projects.

the role will entail periodic appraisal of engineers within the assigned project team. the incumbent will be responsible for appraising graduate and trainee engineers within the team.

meetings and reporting:

in line with company systems the position requires the organisation of activity reviews based on project plans and subsequent prioritisation and the participation in weekly review meeting.

appropriate project reportage will be necessary and input to the monthly managers report is required which should reflect the strategic development of the team.

• project co-ordinator.

technical duties:

determine customer requirements and objectives and assist in developing specifications for projects/systems to ensure customer requirements are met.

apply understanding of industry standards and directives in delivering projects to the required specification.

design and approval of systems (within area of competence) and selection of components for the application.

ensure best practice in all areas of system design, construction, testing, installation and commissioning.

oversee manufacture and function testing of new, modified and refurbished equipment.

preparation of factory acceptance test procedures and running fat with client witness.

compilation of technical specifications and documentation packages.

business promotion & establishment:

contribute to the establishment sales effort, through direct client contact and meetings, with particular focus on target customers as defined within the establishment business plan.

when undertaking visits to site or offshore installations, promote and maintain effective communications with client representatives and sparrows offshore personnel.

engineering & personal development:

the position requires the incumbent to assist in the development, compliance and continuous improvement of project processes and in the development of themselves / others.

it is expected that the incumbent will attend, and actively participate in, all training provided by company, whether internally or externally provided.

carry out continuing professional development necessary to maintain and enhance competence in own area of responsibility.

guidance and mentoring:

provide guidance and mentoring of others.

produce development plan for members within the team.

liaison:

work closely with industrial general manager to set applicable project priorities as well as providing support in the budget creation and monthly reporting process.

it is required that appropriate dialogue is maintained with other specialist areas in the organisation (such as design, electrical & fmeca teams) as well as other support functions (such as commercial, legal, workshop, stores, etc.), contract teams and sales personnel to ensure successful project delivery and business plan is achieved.

enquiry processing will involve shared responsibility for the receipt of engineering services enquiries and the subsequent monitoring of submitted enquiries.

build and maintain positive and constructive working relationships with customers, sub-contractors, management, team members and other colleagues.

work co-operatively and productively with others to ensure planning, technical integrity and successful completion of projects.

management systems - compliance & improvement by:

verifying that team members follow current policies and procedures for hseq, hr and finance.

identifying and reporting non-compliance with policies and procedures and assisting in resolving the issues in a timely manner.

leading the development of team systems and working methods and supporting any improvement programmes and change implementation.

supporting a first-class safety culture and ensuring environmental compliance:

lead by example and communicate to all personnel that safe work and safe operations is an absolute requirement and not just an option.

intervening whenever they see a violation and holding a one to one discussion.

taking part in workplace safety reviews and observation programmes on a regular basis and reporting findings to the hse(q) department.

ensuring that hs&e risks in their business area are assessed, documented and that the control measures are communicated effectively to the workforce to prevent accidents and pollution.

ensuring that any incidents in their business area are reported immediately and thoroughly investigated.

seeking the advice and guidance of the hseq director to address any potential or actual issues.

ensuring that any spills are dealt with by prompt emergency response to prevent pollution from reaching ground water and are reported promptly to the hseq department.

hseq responsibilities

it is mandatory that the incumbent is familiar with the company's hseq policy and takes an active role in the compliance and improvement of sparrows integrated management system. the incumbent must report any incidents, near misses, actual or potential problems with products, services or systems to their line manager.
