team description

fostered arizona is a part of the compassionate education systems initiative at ncyl, aimed at improving the educational outcomes of children and youth in state care. this initiative operates at systems, youth, and community levels to ensure students in foster care experience compassion by the many adults entrusted to support them and are supported on their path to graduate from high school with many opportunities ahead of them. ncyl partners with the governor’s office, department of child safety, and other stakeholders to implement this statewide program, with regional focus areas in pima, maricopa, and yavapai counties.

position

ncyl seeks a temporary education liaison for the fostered arizona program in maricopa county, a collaboration with the arizona’s department of child safety (dcs). this person will be passionate about improving education outcomes for youth in the foster care system. this is a great opportunity for someone passionate about advocating on behalf of students in foster care and supporting academic success. this is a temporary position, from november 2022 through may 2023.

essential functions

provide coaching and support to biological parents, relatives, caregivers and other adults serving as educational decision-makers for young people under dcs supervision.

advocate for special education/section 504 services, school of origin retention, and in school disciplinary proceedings.

frequent communication and collaboration with school staff, biological parents, caregivers, dcs, social workers, and other service providers to create education plans for youth.

attend frequent meetings to advocate on behalf of youth.

track required data and enter case notes in a web-based case management tool in a consistent and timely manner.

support youth and families by providing linkages to community resources.


required qualifications

ability to obtain an arizona level 1 fingerprint clearance card

ability to pass department of child safety background checks

a valid arizona driver’s license and regular access to a reliable vehicle


other qualifications

ability to advocate for students in the education and child welfare systems

general knowledge of the legal protections for youth in foster care under every student succeeds act

general knowledge of special education processes and laws relevant to foster youth

experience serving students in the phoenix area/maricopa county

ability to learn new responsibilities quickly

strong interpersonal and communication skills

demonstrated ability to utilize a racial justice lens

demonstrated ability to build rapport with youth and families

awareness of local and regional community agencies that serve foster youth

awareness of community agencies and resources in maricopa county

demonstrated ability to collaborate and coordinate services with community agencies in a professional manner

ability to work well autonomously and as a part of a team

ability to stay organized with multiple work streams and frequent change

ability to navigate cloud servers, zoom, phone systems and other software


physical requirements

prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.


salary, benefits and location

this is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary position. the salary is competitive at $58,696.00. this is not a benefited position, except for as required by federal and/or arizona law.

the applicant must reside in maricopa county, arizona. this position requires travel to multiple sites in maricopa county, arizona, and the ability to work remotely.
