the role we are looking to appoint a strong candidate as public and youth engagement manager to lead our focus area on citizenship and the rule of law, for a fixed period until 31 july 2024, with the possibility of extension if further funding is secured. the public and youth engagement manager will be expected to undertake the following duties: manage the delivery of the public and youth engagement programme. during the current cycle of this programme (remainder of school year ), this will include: being responsible for the recruitment, training and supervision of around 30 volunteers (including a significant number already involved in the programme) who will lead school sessions; promoting the online resources of the programme, which seek to make rule of law ideas accessible to a broad audience, and adding to those already in place (see background above); running communications for the programme, including on twitter and other social media channels; undertaking an evaluation of the first cycle of the public and youth engagement programme by the grant end date (august 2023), and producing a report on this cycle. for the future of our work in this area (school years and beyond), this will include: planning a new set of activities for school-age audiences, building on the first cycle; developing and overseeing the production of new materials, which may include videos, briefing notes, classroom guides and possibly full online courses (such as moocs). undertaking recruitment, delivery, communications and evaluation activities as in the first programme cycle (see above). promote other existing bingham centre resources in the citizenship and rule of law focus area, including by: liaising with schools which are using, or considering using, the bingham centre's rule of law for citizenship education resource materials; liaising with institutions running moocs or hosting online resources developed by the bingham centre, and consulting with past and present members of bingham centre team who led the development of the courses; responding to queries from students or others interested in these resources. maintain, develop and deepen relationships with stakeholders in the field of citizenship and the rule of law, including by: sharing findings from the public and youth engagement programme with audiences from academia, the teaching and legal professions, through reports, blogs and other written outputs, and speaking at conferences and on other platforms; working with senior colleagues from the bingham centre and biicl development team to approach law firms and other prospective funders and supporters of our activities (for example law firms which may provide volunteers to run school workshops). contribute to planning and initiating projects in the citizenship and the rule of law focus area, including by: working with the bingham centre director of research and senior colleagues to develop a new multi-year strategy for the citizenship and the rule of law focus area, within a framework of a new bingham centre strategy that will follow the strategy; working with the bingham centre director of research, biicl development team and other colleagues to develop project proposals in line with this strategy, seek funding from appropriate bodies, and launch new project activities when funding has been secured; leading efforts to engage a wider public audience in the work of the bingham centre and biicl, and, in particular young people and stakeholders outside the legal sector, including disadvantaged and traditionally excluded groups. this will involve helping other bingham centre and biicl researchers to identify opportunities to be involved in and achieve impact for their research in the citizenship and the rule of law programme. key working relationships will include: bingham centre director bingham centre deputy director bingham centre director of research biicl director of marketing and communications biicl development director biicl deputy development director biicl grants manager this is a full-time post, which is offered for the period 1 december 2022 (exact start date is negotiable) to 31 july 2024, with the possibility of extension if further funding is secured. consideration will be given to secondments or a slightly less than full-time role, if requested. a salary package of gbp35,000 - gbp39,000 pa is expected, depending on qualifications and experience. person specification the successful applicant will demonstrate the following mix of experience, skills and attributes: experience working with young people or disadvantaged communities; teaching, campaign work or legal practice (experience in any one of these areas is essential, and a combination may be an advantage); managing projects, including liaising with multiple partners and civil society stakeholders (experience on projects with some education dimension may be an advantage, particularly involvement with schools and/or developing educational materials); undertaking project evaluations and producing project reports. knowledge sufficient knowledge of current affairs and the uk legal system to produce briefing papers for both students and teachers; a broad understanding of uk politics, at both national and local level; a developed understanding of the requirements of the rule of law; a degree in law, politics or a related field may be an advantage but is not essential. competences excellent writing skills, and the ability to present material in an engaging and accessible manner (experience of preparing materials or reports for non-legal audiences may be an advantage); good organisational skills; an enthusiasm for bringing people together; willingness to facilitate discussions featuring viewpoints with which you disagree; ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, basic websites and social media in a professional environment (primarily twitter, facebook and linkedin);
