Overview: as a blasting & painting supervisor, you will oversee the surface preparation, coating application, and finishing activities for industrial equipment, structures, and surfaces. your role involves leading a team of blasting and painting technicians, coordinating with project managers, and ensuring adherence to safety, quality, and environmental standards. you will collaborate with clients, inspectors, and subcontractors to meet project requirements and deliver high-quality blasting and painting services.key responsibilities:project planning and coordination:collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients to review project specifications, coating requirements, and surface preparation standards for blasting and painting projects.develop work plans, schedules, and resource allocation strategies to ensure timely completion of blasting and painting activities within budget and scope.coordinate with procurement teams to procure blasting media, painting materials, equipment, and protective gear required for project execution.team leadership and supervision:lead and supervise a team of blasting and painting technicians, providing guidance, training, and performance feedback to ensure adherence to safety protocols, quality standards, and project requirements.assign tasks, delegate responsibilities, and monitor work progress to optimize productivity, efficiency, and resource utilization.conduct regular safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job site inspections to promote a culture of safety awareness and compliance with regulatory requirements.surface preparation and blasting:oversee the surface preparation process, including abrasive blasting, power tool cleaning, and chemical cleaning, to remove rust, scale, corrosion, and contaminants from surfaces.monitor blasting operations, including abrasive media selection, blast pressure, nozzle distance, and containment measures, to achieve the desired surface profile and cleanliness.coating application and finishing:supervise the coating application process, including spray painting, brush and roller application, and plural component application, to apply protective coatings, primers, and finishes to prepared surfaces.ensure compliance with coating specifications, film thickness requirements, and application procedures, as specified by coating manufacturers, project specifications, and industry standards.monitor environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, and dew point, to optimize coating application and curing processes and prevent coating defects.quality assurance and control:implement quality control measures, inspection procedures, and documentation protocols to verify the quality and integrity of blasting and painting workmanship.perform visual inspections, dry film thickness measurements, adhesion tests, and holiday detection tests to identify and resolve defects, pinholes, or inconsistencies in coatings.document inspection results, maintain records of surface preparation and coating application activities, and ensure compliance with project specifications and client requirements.safety and environmental compliance:enforce safety policies, procedures, and practices to mitigate hazards, prevent accidents, and promote a safe working environment for personnel involved in blasting and painting operations.conduct blasting and painting safety training, respiratory fit testing, and hazard assessments to ensure compliance with osha, epa, and other regulatory requirements.implement environmental controls, waste management practices, and spill containment measures to minimize environmental impact and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.client communication and reporting:serve as a point of contact for clients, inspectors, and project stakeholders, providing updates on project progress, milestones, and any issues or concerns related to blasting and painting activities.prepare progress reports, work logs, and inspection reports documenting blasting and painting activities, coating specifications, and compliance with project requirements.communicate project status, deviations from specifications, and corrective actions to project managers and clients as required.skillshigh school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in abrasive blasting, industrial painting, or related field is preferred.previous experience as a blasting and painting supervisor, lead technician, or foreman in industrial coatings, marine coatings, or construction coatings.strong knowledge of surface preparation techniques, coating application methods, and coating inspection procedures in accordance with sspc, nace, and astm standards.proficiency in reading and interpreting coating specifications, material safety data sheets (msds), and project drawings.leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and mentor a diverse team of blasting and painting personnel.familiarity with safety regulations, hazard recognition, and accident prevention practices in abrasive blasting and painting operations.ability to prioritize tasks, make sound decisions under pressure, and adapt to changing project requirements and deadlines.strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to quality and safety in blasting and painting operations.proficiency in microsoft office applications and coating inspection software is desirable.
