summary

performs the duties required in connection with the servicing and maintenance of fixed and mobile radio equipment used in connection with radio communications; and, in addition, performs other related work.

perform all radio work in the shop or field.  install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair mobile data terminals and pedestals. design, modify and update radio files such as system, templates and data revisions. install and maintains dispatcher consoles, control stations desk sets, single site repeaters and
microwaves.



job duties & responsibilities

duties are:

make routine check of all radio sets; tune and adjust this equipment to operate within the prescribed frequency range and to give correct output. check gas-filled radio transmission line for maintenance of gas pressure. inspect, test, locate trouble, and make repairs to radio transmitters, receivers, and accessory equipment. place, replace, and remove radio and audio frequency equipment. make checks for the detection of radio interference to the equipment used in connection with the radio communication system, as directed. under the supervision of an engineer or supervisor, make checks to indicate the quality and reception of radio coverage in the area of the radio communication system, perform work in connection with other special radio tests, and make checks on new types of radio transmitters, receivers, and associated equipment. compare portable frequency meter standard with the standard frequency broadcast by station wwv. operate test instruments, such as audio oscillators, frequency meters, oscilloscopes, vacuum tube voltmeters, capacitor analyzers, and millimeters. coordinate his work with that of service dispatchers, troubleshooters, and others who use radio communication equipment. instruct other employees on the proper care and use of radio equipment. inspect, service, and maintain electronic and other similar equipment in use in the division, where required. keep in good order all tools and equipment required in connection with this work. operate car or light truck; keep interior of vehicle neat and orderly. perform clerical work related to this job. perform other similar or less skilled work of the occupational group.

must meet the company's "general requirements"; and, in addition: 

must have had a minimum of one year's experience in work of the line, meter, or substation departments, or there being no applicants so qualified, then the equivalent.  must be a high school graduate, or the equivalent, preferably having taken courses in physics and mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and    trigonometry. in addition, must have sufficient understanding of the subjects necessary for satisfactory progress in radio work. (satisfactory completion of    additional work in a recognized technical or correspondence school for the equivalent of one school year, or the equivalent, will meet this requirement.)  must meet one of the following conditions:  hold either a valid class a or class b amateur radio license and must have had one year's experience on repair or radio or television receivers, or the equivalent (in general three years' active amateur background is sufficient to meet this requirement) must have had three years' experience as a radio or radar technician, or  the equivalent.  must be able to qualify for the required operating licenses, such as radio telephone operator's license, second class.   must be able to understand and apply manufacturers' instructions for testing, adjusting, and maintaining radio, other electronic, and similar equipment.  must be able to diagnose and correct electrical and mechanical troubles with radio transmitter and receiver sets, including accessory equipment, and with   other electronic and similar equipment.  must be cooperative and have the ability to exercise good judgment in the work.  must have the mechanical and mental aptitudes suitable to radio work and must have the qualities of patience, preciseness, manual dexterity, and the ability to exercise due care in this work.  must be able to qualify for an auto driver's license to operate motor vehicles in the state of new jersey.  must be proficient in the application of approved methods of artificial respiration.
