summary


the laboratory assistant-(with special morgue duties) performs tasks to support the laboratory technical staff in the areas of specimen procurement, specimen processing, body transport, storage and release and some basic lab testing.




qualifications

essential functions


under general supervision and in accordance with company policies, procedures and guidelines, this position:


identifies patients with accuracy to perform venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks with proficiency without supervisionlabels specimens accurately and distributes them to the appropriate department to ensure specimen integritymay accession specimens accurately into the lis system using prescribed laboratory guidelinesprocesses specimens and prepares them for testing utilizing various types of lab equipmentmay track all specimen samples in the lis system for inventory purposes as requiredmaintains phlebotomy area and trays with ample supplies and in a clean and safe conditionmaintains adequate level of supplies in the accessioning work area, where applicableassists in the care and maintenance of lab work area, furnishings and equipmenttroubleshoots missing sample inquiries from other clh facilities or physician officesfollows test requirements of reference laboratory and procures appropriate specimen for testingassists in disposing of all laboratory wastes following osha and lab guidelinesmay operate lab autoclave to render hazardous materials safetransports bodies from hospital facility patient units including the emergency department to the designated morgue or body storage refrigerators or refrigerated lockers.coordinates and releases bodies from hospital morgue to designated mortuaries.maintains all documentation of body storage receipts into morgue and release from morgue.assists the lab manager and supervisor with other related duties involving body storage and release.will be included in the on-call schedule for after hours body transport.may act as backup receptionist or couriermay perform weekly inventory at site and place order with the purchasing departmentmay receive requested stock items and distribute them to the appropriate place within the laboratorymay perform limited testing (i.e., finger sticks, bleeding times, and sweat tests)may perform urine drug collections per dot guidelines and process urine drug specimensmay pack and prepare dangerous goods shipment items to outer island and/or mainlandmay be assigned to work at other locations as requiredadheres to safety, confidentiality, compliance, and legal requirements & guidelinesmaintains consistent and reliable attendance and complies with company guidelines on attendanceperforms other duties as assigned


physical capabilities


carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects; and lifting of up to 50 lbs may be requiredmoderate to heavy physical effort.  must be able to lift bodies up to 200 pounds or more (with assistance of a cadaver lift or another person)frequent reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouchingmust be able to hear, see, and respond adequatelyfrequent prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and bending overfinger dexterity and eye-hand coordination
