position overview
the product design engineer ii has design & development responsibility for a good amount of products. the purpose is to maintain and a grow a portfolio of steel boxes, fittings and weatherproof products within these well-respected brands. products are sold through both retail and electrical distribution channels, requiring good understanding of u.l., c.s.a., n.e.m.a., ansi, n.f.p.a. (n.e.c.) and customer specifications. product differentiation is key in this competitive landscape, putting a premium on innovation, creativity and passion.
duties and responsibilities
collaborate with marketing and end-users to gather voc (voice of customer)
perform patent searches and submissions to support new product.
manage capital and expenses within new product launch
create conceptual and production ready designs in solidworks.
lead cross-functional design reviews for new product.
evaluate prototype part submissions from tooling suppliers.
develop "should cost estimates using dfm/dfa tools.
create preliminary quality plans.
coordinate packaging and label designs with marketing/product managers.
engage ul (or other certification body) in developing test plans, budgets, and timelines for certification testing.
create prototypes and perform preliminary testing on product concepts
coordinate release of all new product material after certification testing. assist marketing with promotional materials, instructional videos, etc.
material master data in sap
cost reduce parts/designs
skills and experience
experience with dfmeas or pfmeas.
proficient with excel and ms project. experience with vbasic.
functional knowledge of ul 514 a, b, c & d.
good understanding of the n.e.c. (n.f.p.a. - 70)
3 5 years of experience in plastic composites and proficient in material selection.
3 5 years of experience in component/assembly design, plastic injection molding processes and mold design.
2 3 years of experience in solidworks - 3d cad or similar.
knowledge of mold flow for solid works.
knowledge of apqp phase gate processes, gd&t, 8d/a3 root cause analysis, and six sigma methodologies.
experience with sap or other erp platforms.
education
bsme from 4-year abet accredited program preferred.
