eco timber and furniture company requires a multiskilled supervisor to look after our timber production yard and manage our stock. we are a fast growing small business which specialises in supplying hardwood timber that we mill from urban trees felled in and around london.

out timber yard is at the heart of the business. currently it's managed by the company's md, but we're growing fast and need someone to take over its management, working closely with him.

the ideal candidate will be someone who combines practical skills, with the ambition and initiative to play a key role building an innovative new business.

job is full-time 9.00am - 5.30pm, monday - friday. we are open to applications from candidates preferring part-time, for example 3-4 days per week. salary (at full time) will be based on experience from £22,000 - £26,000.

here’s an idea of what the job includes:

tree trunk delivery - oversee deliveries of tree trunks, communicating effectively with third parties and drivers, ensuring they are stored correctly in our yard outdoors, records maintained, and moved as required using our fork lift.
support the milling process – a contractor is used for all milling. you will be responsible for overseeing the stacking of the milled timber outdoors, including manually handling boards, and keeping careful records. you will not be required to use the timber mill, but you may need to use a chainsaw on occasions (training and ppe will be provided)
manage air drying timber – ongoing management of the air drying (seasoning) process. this will include regularly monitoring board moisture content, maintaining and moving timber stacks using fork lift, and record keeping.
kiln drying – once the boards have air dried (between 6-24 months depending on species and size), load timber in batches by hand and fork lift into one of two kilns. monitor the computer controlled drying process to ensure effective drying - the timber is dried to furniture-grade moisture content in around 5-10 days.
dry timber stock management – once the boards are kiln dried, you will be responsible for unloading them and storing them indoors in our dry storage facility and keeping close records
machining – planing, machining and preparing timber boards for sale
photography – photographing selected boards for display on our website. preparing documentation with board details to go online
picking timber for sale – selecting timber from dry storage to match customer orders. you will need to learn about the characteristics of individual timber species to be able to select suitable boards (training available)
record keeping – you must be enthusiastic about keeping excellent records and creating systems which enable the rest of the team to know what timber we have in stock and where it is. this will involve simple practical ideas (e.g. timber labelling) with computer systems such as basic spreadsheets. you must be happy using basic it systems including email, spreadsheets and smartphones and learning to use new systems as required.
talking to customers – on occasions speaking to customers or meeting them and helping them choose timber
yard maintenance – keeping the yard tidy and safe
driving – occasionally transporting timber using our van to our shop in walthamstow, london (insurance provided)
teamworking – working both alone and as part of the team. as the business grows, you can expect to manage others
making things better – we need someone who is driven to shape the business, who has ideas, looks for problems and ways to solve them.
