max (14) is an affectionate young man who enjoys watching nursery rhymes on his ipad, lots of creative silly play involving funny voices, puzzles and big gestures and on weekends being actively encouraged to take trips out to his favourite places. max has autism and dravet syndrome which presents with seizures and developmental delay, causing difficulties with speech, motor skills and a learning disability. max’s speech is limited but he can clearly express his likes and dislikes. he can present with behaviour that challenges and you will learn to spot the triggers and de-escalate difficult situations you may find yourself in with him. max’s medications are administered via a peg. he is mobile and can walk unaided however for longer journeys uses a wheelchair.

overview of role:

as a weekend day carer you will support max to have the most fun you can possibly have together. starting at 9am you’ll have time to get organised (gathering personal care items, pack lunches, emergency medication pack, appropriate clothing etc) and spend a little time at the house before heading out for the day. you will often be taking buses, trains, taxis and sometimes even boats to much loved destinations like the london zoo, kew gardens and the south bank. you and max will get to constantly negotiate and renegotiate where the day takes you. usually ending up back at the house close to supper time, where there will be some much deserved chill time, relaxed play and often tv. bath time, bed time and then hand over back to mum and dad or a night carer all before 8pm. that’s the routine,

who this job would really suit:

someone that can rise to the challenge, will enjoy lively days out with a big kid, being hands-on, energetic and yet staying calm, confident and adaptable under pressure.

you will have worked well in the past as part of a small team and don’t mind working within a family environment, always being respectful and mindful of the family’s home and privacy. this is a permanent role, and we are looking for someone who can commit to max and wishes to provide consistency and continuity for him and his family.

what’s great about this role:

you are going to be involved in developing some of the most fun times max gets to have during his week. the role provides an excellent training opportunity within care work. you’ll have great support from the team leader who knows max very well as well as his parents who are very generous with answering questions and giving of their time. max is yet adorable big kid and a pleasure to work with once you get to know him. given all the above you will be a much appreciated member of a team.
