about the role

the available role is for a lead scientist in our upstream research department, with a specific focus on investigating and developing technologies based on high frequency electrical discharge/low temperature plasma discharge.

the successful candidate will be required to develop novel theories aligned to our product strategy and prove them through investigation, ideally having strong theoretical and practical experience in the fields of electrical engineering and plasma science.

the role will be a part of a first principals research team tasked with exploring new opportunities within the personal care category. the team's primary objective is to develop fundamental understanding from both scientific and consumer perspectives, and conduct research that yields novel innovations and the subsequent development of disruptive and highly effective products.

although the team has access to the wide array of expertise at dyson, covering all scientific disciplines, you will be solely responsible for the investigation and development of your project. it is critical that you have a very proactive attitude and can individually progress projects according to broad briefs, while also working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to help identify and realise technical opportunities.

the research and design of investigations, the practical setup of experiments, conducting controlled experiments with appropriate measurements, and performing thorough analysis of results will form the core responsibilities of this position.

though the role is based in malmesbury, uk, dyson has a research function that spans the globe - to be successful the candidate will need to work closely with a range of teams and disciplines located in a variety of time zones. maintaining effective working relationships independent of physical location will be essential, requiring strong communication and collaborative skills.

senior researcher investigating the generation and control of low temperature atmospheric plasma.

the generation of technical hypotheses that are aligned with category product objectives and based on theoretical and experimental insight.

design, build, and test custom plasma generators according to your predictions and characterise the output.

operation and maintenance of equipment critical to research investigations.

identification of new equipment and external collaborations to support research areas.

produce high quality reports tailored for a variety of product development stakeholders.

progress projects using the dyson research milestone process: conduct and analyse investigations; document and report findings; communicate to key stakeholders; and handover to downstream teams.

present insights and results to james dyson and the exec. team when required.

about you

degree qualified in relevant scientific discipline (e.g. electrical engineering, physics, or any related field)

phd is an advantage but not strictly necessary

>5 years post-graduate working experience either in academia, industry, or industry-facing positions e.g. collaborations.

fundamental understanding of the generation and control of low temperature plasma discharge

demonstrable experience designing, constructing and experimenting with plasma generation technologies.

experience integrating plasma discharge technologies into consumer products would be very desirable.

strong analytical and problem-solving skills

good communication and presentation skills. able to translate and communicate complex technical ideas to wider team, senior managers, and directors when required.
