looking for a mentor/befriender and support worker to start asap to work with a young adult with some additional needs

3-4 hrs per week £15 ph one evening per week

“mentoring is a process where a more experienced person consciously enters into a relationship with a less experienced person (who also willingly engages in that relationship) which aims to develop the less experienced partner in an agreed way. the relationship should be supportive, safe and boundaried … part of the boundary should be an agreed time scale; an agreed way of working together; and conscious positive modelling by the mentor”

the role will include the following duties:

developing a positive relationship of trust and fun where by the mentor can encourage and impact the confidence of the young adult to engage in a range of beneficial activities. sharing and engaging in hobbies to make good use of time.

working with the young person giving the necessary support to participate in a range of activities.

support may be coaching, listening, advice, challenge, rehearsal for formal situations (meetings), practical support depending on the individual circumstances required.

being a sympathetic ear and offering balanced advice when decisions need to be made.

working closely with the young person’s parent to discuss a weekly/fortnightly plan and timetable with clear goals that will help the young adult.

acting as an advocate for the young person to ensure their voice is heard.

engaging the young adult to consider continuing professional development for his future, looking at possible courses, traineeships and apprenticeships.

this promises to be a rewarding role and one that involves spending good quality time with a young man who is intelligent and would flourish with a little support and good role modelling!
