summary:

we are a close family and our dad is highly thought of and loved within our family. he has a good sense of humour and is a gentle man. we are looking for a holiday/sickness cover personal assistant for care for up to 7 hours per week and possibly more during busy sickness/holiday periods.

this role is to support my elderly father in his own home, covering absences such as sickness and holiday as well as other possible shifts that our usual pas can’t do. he is immobile so requires someone to assist with general household tasks, personal hygiene and social and wellbeing needs.

the shifts would be up to 3.5 hours either 10am -1.30pm or 4pm-7.30pm and may include weekends. you will be part of a team of private care providers and 2 agencies currently providing care.

the candidate must have knowledge and be trained in hoist techniques and have previous care experience.

good communication skills and a friendly approach are key.

the care costs are funded by croydon council so in line with their policies the successful candidate must meet the following criteria:

• must be self-employed and be able to provide a unique tax reference (utr) as provided by the hmrc.

• provide proof of an enhanced dbs or willing to complete one (cost covered)

• references including those from the last employer/client

• provide proof of public liability insurance for care work

rates of pay to be agreed and payment will be made through the virtual wallet pay system once invoices received.

other requirements

• non-smoker preferred or someone who is willing to refrain from smoking during work hours.

the role requires close personal contact with an individual who is extremely vulnerable to the risk of infection and disease transmission. preference may be given to applicants who have been fully vaccinated against covid-19. careful consideration will be given to applicants who can show the vaccination is not suitable for them on reasonable grounds.

typical duties

domestic -

• helping with laundry, washing, drying, hanging, folding, ironing putting away

• changing bed linen/towels

• bed making

• general cleaning, tidying and housework, including kitchen and bathroom, cleaning, dusting and vacuuming etc.

• taking out rubbish and recycling

• preparing drinks, snacks and meals.

• assisting with exercises on a daily basis to maintain flexibility

• maintenance of small garden, perhaps half an hour a week

• making tea for guests

• some outings including occasional appointments via transport or locally via wheelchair

personal care -

• supervise and assist with bed wash and possible shower – towelling dry/ drying hair

• assistance with applying cream

• general hair/skin care

• dressing and undressing/ helping with buttons and fastenings

• assistance with getting out of bed using a hoist

• full assistance with medication i.e. helping to take tablets from foil/packets

• mealtimes e.g. cutting up food, assistance to eat, regular drinks

• physiotherapy exercises

• observe and report skincare issues

social -

• to talk with my dad

• assist him choose tv programs/radio stations he likes

• show him pictures of family/friend/familiar places

• allow him to talk about his past and fond memories.

• be respectful of his personal space and needs for quiet time.
