essential tasks and responsibilities (listed in order of importance):

 

1.    diagnosis, services, and repairs all  equipment as indicated on repair orders and consistent with repair standards.  repairs include but are not limited to (80 - 90%):

  •  air systems
  •  electrical systems
  •  brake systems
  •  suspension systems
  •  landing gear
  •  roof/floor patches and sections
  •  swing and roll doors
  •  minor welds and torch burns
  •  interior repairs and appearance
  •  

    2.  performs safety and legally required inspections (fhwa/bit). (15-20%)

  •  performs subsequent preventive maintenance
  •  maintains tires through tire airing program
  •  checks for mechanical problems not indicated on repair order
  •  makes emergency repairs to trailers when necessary
  •  drives to customer to provide on-site mechanical services
  •  consults repair manuals on difficult repairs
  •  removes/installs appropriate decals and unit numbers
  •  

    3.  maintains parts and yard organization (with direction from operations management) to ensure a clean and safe      working environment.  (5%)

  •  uses spotter to move trailers in yard
  •  maintains parts inventory in parts storage area
  •  locks/unlocks containers and parts storage area
  •  maintains service truck and tools within
  •  enters, modifies, and retrieves repair information using emm
  •  assists with trailer check-in
  •  

    4.  may perform other miscellaneous branch duties that contribute to the success of the branch. requirements:  

    required:  high school (or ged equivalent) and 1year previous trailer repair experience (exception made for branches with more than one mechanic).

    preferred: high school (or ged equivalent) plus specialized training via an apprenticeship and/or trade school and over 1 year previous trailer repair experience knowledge, skills, and abilities

    adaptability/flexibility:

    ability to adjust and/or stray from regular work routine in order to accommodate customers’ requests.  (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience

    customer service:

    ability to meet and/or exceed customer’s expectations regarding quality and consistency of service provided. (tasks 1,2,3 & 4) - previous experience & on the job training

     

     

    driving ability:

    ability to drive service truck on highways and interstates and possess the appropriate license class in accordance with state law. (task 2) - previous experience

    energy:

    ability to consistently maintain a high activity or productivity level. (tasks 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    dependability:

    ability to arrive on time to work and demonstrate consistent behaviors in making repairs and fixing errors. (task 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    inclement weather:

    ability to complete tasks in poor weather conditions including extreme heat, cold and in rain or snow. (tasks 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    independence/autonomy:

    ability to work productivity by one’s self for extended periods of time without close supervision. (tasks 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    ability to take actions beyond what is required in a pro-active manner without continuous guidance. (tasks, 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    knowledge of  repair standards:

    ability to make efficient, quality repairs in accordance with  repair standards. (tasks 1 & 2) - on the job training

    mechanical skills:

    ability to make minor repairs to electrical systems including lights, air systems including valves and air ride, body installations, landing gear, brake and suspension systems and door repairs. (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience and on the job training

    mechanical knowledge:

    knowledge of air, electronic, braking, and suspension systems as well as general knowledge of mechanical operation and body repair. (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience and on the job training

    physical wellness:

    ability to perform the essential job requirements free of physical constraints. (tasks 1,2 & 3) -previous experience

    problem solving/diagnosis skills:

    ability to examine all possible problems by collecting evidence and weighing factual information. (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience and on the job training

    reading ability:

    ability to read and understand repair manuals and work orders as well as fhwa documentation. (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience

    ability to follow regulations and procedures, check equipment and recognize hazards to insure personal and public safety as well as utilize all xtra lease issued safety equipment. (tasks 1,2 & 3) - previous experience and on the job training

    ability to work in a collaborative manner with other mechanics and/or operations personnel. (tasks 1) - previous experience

    ability to prioritizes and organize tasks within a given time constraints and repair time standards (e.g., prepares for daily repairs by insuring parts and/or equipment is functional and nearby). (tasks 1,2 & 3) - previous experience

    verbal communication skills:

    ability to express/present ideas or information that is coherent using the spoken word. (tasks 1 & 2) - previous experience

    welding and torch ability:

    ability to make quality minor wields while insuring personal safety.  tasks (1 & 2) - previous experience and on the job training

     

     

     

     

     

    working conditions: outside in open area generally exposed to heat, rain, cold, and snow (depending on geographic location)

  • yard - gravel, dusty and/or muddy environment
  • trailers - greasy, dusty, muddy
  • customer’s environment - may be dirty, dusty, muddy, greasy, and noisy.
  •  

     

    physical activity:

  • bending, climbing, laying on back, crouching, and other mechanically related physical demands     (e.g. turning, squeezing, cutting)
  • lifts/carries 50 lbs; may lift up to 150 lbs
  •  

    miscellaneous requirements:

  • must possess own tools.
  • must have 13 months trailer repair experience to complete fhwa inspections consistent with the department of transportation requirements.
  • must possess current/legal driver’s license.
