technical writer for houston tx: this person is responsible for interpreting engineering plans and/or reviewing sample product to prepare material lists, and specifications to be used as standards to give equipment installers, potential users, and maintenance workers guidelines to install use and maintain purchased equipment. under the supervision of the product manager, the specification writer writes technical descriptions specifying product assembly methods, proper use of product as well as the periodic inspection and maintenance of the installed product utilizing knowledge of material standards, industrial processes, and manufacturing procedures.

  • education: ba engineering degree + 3-5 years of experience
  • job duties:

  • interprets engineering plans and/or reviews sample product to prepare material lists, and specifications to be used as steps to assemble product at point of use.
  • analyzes plans and diagrams, or observes and makes notes on material processing, to determine that material and processing specifications, or specifications for assembly or construction activities for those products are adequately provided in the iom in writing or with suitable illustrations.
  • draws rough sketches or arranges finished drawings or photographs to illustrate specified materials or assembly sequence.
  • maintains the master specification and iom files within the facility for all applicable corporate branded products.
  • works closely with product management and marketing to translate product and customer requirements into technical specifications and performance requirements to include product specification for sales and service support as well as appropriate iom creation and maintenance.
  • works with development, testing and operations to get world class products developed, tested, and deployed. composes technical documents, manuals, bulletins, brochures, publications, training manuals and special reports to provide product support for customer and product user needs, will research product design, capabilities, and compatibility ranges to assist in improving the product technical documents, tools, and support requirements, will research industry standards, regulations, certifications and certifying bodies as required ensuring that all branded products are specified to, tested to, and meet target market and customer demands.
  • oversees the writing, editing, publishing, and distribution of specification, sales support and user required documents. reviews various resources and prepares analyses or summaries. refers questions concerning specific product requirements to the various product group managers and/or the business managers as required.
  • requests and/or plans meetings as needed with various managers and vendors to ensure that specifications are clearly defined and understood before commencement of production runs of new products.
  • determines the need for and works with the coordinators of 3rd party testing.
  • assists engineering and product management to performs 1st article inspection.
  • performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.
  • hiring requirements:

  • knowledge of the techniques and methods of planning, organizing, and writing various types of materials; of research methodology; and of departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • skill in the use of office equipment
  • ability to conduct research; to compose, review, illustrate, and edit technical documents, materials, and reports is required.
  • ability to read and interpret detailed written instructions, to apply common sense understanding to carry out multi-step instructions and to deal with both standardized and non-standardized situations with many variables.
  • required education and experience:

  • bachelor’s degree in engineering or another technical field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required. as well as a minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a specification writer for the industrial market.
  • excellent computer skills using ms office products, and a familiarity with researching various industry standards and test requirements.
  • required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • thorough knowledge of industrial specifications, especially for commodity type products (gloves, rainwear, pneumatic tools, etc.), broad technical knowledge of consumer type products, and the engineering disciplines used in the construction of these products to provide, articulate, accurate, and current information when developing product specifications.
  • high level of expertise in writing and editing, developing, and maintaining uniform writing style and format standards, organizing written material, and maintaining a complete command of research methods to develop authoritative information on engineering and production practices, as well as industry standards.
  • must be comfortable walking around manufacturing facility
  • preferred skills:

  • knowledge of trade associations, their role in the consumer product industry, and how they relate to various design and manufacturing disciplines.
  • familiarity with trade association literature as a means of maintaining knowledge of the latest production practices.
