summary

my son is a bright but shy and quiet 23 year old. he enjoys a range of activities outside the home. he is kind, and caring, but needs some support in social skills and to access the community for activities. he has been attending university since autumn 2020 to study engineering. he is technically minded and a very creative person.

my son has high functioning autism which has an impact on his social interaction with others but he has no challenging behaviours. he also finds it difficult to concentrate. he can become anxious or wary of trying new things, so needs to be supported to try out new facilities or services. he needs guidance to become fully independent without relying on the support of others.

this role involves accompanying my son to access the community and activities, being mindful of safety and promoting independence and reassurance where necessary. there will also be an element of assisting him to organise himself regarding his personal life and academic work. this includes assistance with basic life skills i.e. budgeting, cooking hot meals, planning his time and accessing different social and educational facilities.

all applicants must be willing to undertake an enhanced disclosure & barring service check

successful applicants will be entitled to holiday pay and will be issued employment contracts.

typical duties

domestic -

assisting and prompting my son to:

• prepare drinks, snacks and meals.

• carry out basic shopping

• correspondence e.g. reading letters, help writing replies, form-filling, assisting with household paperwork

• make phone calls, arranging appointments

social:

• accompany when accessing social and leisure activities

• accompany to doctors/hospital appointments when required

• accompanying when clothes-buying

• accompanying on trips out e.g. to the museum, to central london, to visit exhibitions, to the garden centre, beach, cinema, craft fairs, local visits, out shopping for fun, attending social events, attending therapies and disability group etc.

• to assist with organising university work and time planning

previous experience preferred but this is not as essential as a kind and common sense approach to these roles.
