Waste & recycling operative - private island, uk - united kingdom, truro, cornwall

we're looking for someone to take responsibility for the daily operation of our waste & recycling initiatives on thie island of tresco, in the beautiful isles of scilly, uk.

this vital role involves daily collections from 39 bin points across the island, then sorting and organising the freight of waste back to the mainland. we provide accommodation with all roles and require candidates to relocate full time to the isles of scilly.

salary: competitive, with rent free accommodation

hours: 48 hours per week

contract length: permanent

duties include:

responsibility for the safe and efficient running of our waste and recycling services.
managing 1 member of seasonal staff
using a modified nissan truck for the daily collection of waste from our 39 collection sites
ensuring the waste is segregated by residual waste, green and food waste, clean carboard, metal and glass
managing and operating our waste management equipment – including a bio-digestor, metal crusher, glass crusher and balers
keeping meticulous records of waste processed for tresco estate as well as the council of the isles of scilly
working closely with the freight team and the isles of scilly steamship company for the removal of waste from the island
ensuring all collection and work areas are kept clean and tidy
ordering parts and equipment as required in compliance with estate budget and procurement policy
responsibility for day-to-day decision making for waste and recycling activities, ensure a range of options are explored and that risks and resource implications are taken full account of in collaboration with the head of engineering

our ideal candidate:

will be a natural problem solver, able to develop creative, pragmatic solutions to problems with materials available
be able to balance competing priorities
have good communication and interpersonal skills
able to manage flexible workloads at different times of the year
must have a full driver’s licence (clean preferred)
preferably have previous experience of waste or recycling
willing to undertake further training as required
