working closely with science teachers to support the work of staff and students in the college’s laboratories and classrooms where necessary. you will join a busy and successful division that operates across two sites located 1 mile apart from each.

st bede’s and st joseph’s catholic college is a co-educational school, founded by the merger of the two catholic secondary schools in bradford; the boys school st bede’s catholic grammar school and the girls school st joseph’s catholic college.

the college opened in september 2014 and welcomed its new intake of 290 year 7 students which increased the total of students to over 2000, including 425 in the 6th form st benedict’s. the college community follows the concepts of ignite, illuminate and shine and is proud to keep these themes at the centre of all their teaching.

we are looking for two science technicians to support the work of staff and students in the college’s laboratories and classrooms.

as science technician, you will:

provide assistance and information as required in the preparation of resources for practical lessons that meet both the health and safety standards and college requirements
provide general assistance in the safe storage, transit and accessibility of resources
assist the technician team to ensure a healthy, safe and productive work environment through the routine and maintenance of, cleaning of equipment, laboratories and prep rooms

you will be expected to:

prepare solutions materials, cultures for living organisms
assemble apparatus
obtain materials by local purchase, trialling practical activities
carry out risk assessments for technical activities
assisting in practical classes
constructing and modifying apparatus
ensure that stock levels are maintained and future requirements are identified
ensure the availability of suitable resources
compile orders and to liaise with suppliers and finance departments as/when required
delivery of equipment and materials and organisms to rooms
collection of, checking and returning resources to stores
maintaining resources, including routine repairs
keep up to date with health and safety requirements
caring for plants and animals
organising and storing resources
general cleaning of laboratory bench surfaces and fixed equipment
cleaning laboratory sinks, used equipment
disposal of/treating waste materials in line with current guidelines
checking deliveries
provide first aid and attend appropriate training as necessary

about you

strong administrative and organisational skills will come as standard, along with a willingness to embrace change and be able to demonstrate commitment, flexibility and integrity.

you will also be an excellent communicator, with the ability to listen to all stakeholders with emotional intelligence.

we are looking for a strong team player with the attention to fine detail, as well as the ‘big picture’, who is quick-thinking and can find solutions to problems as they arise.
