experienced traffic marshal

as traffic marshal will be the eyes and ears of the moving plant / vehicles making sure any manoeuvres they make are safe and does not put the driver or anyone else in danger. communication between drivers via a radio link or pre-arranged hand signals is an integral part of their duties by doing this they can inform the driver of what is going on around the vehicle since they may not have a complete view or clear visibility. a traffic marshal can also be called upon for many other duties such as directing traffic in and around the site. as such they are sometimes also called traffic marshals.

role and responsibility

the traffic marshal is the eyes of the vehicle/plant operator, their primary responsibility is to guide vehicles and plant safely, and ensuring contact is avoided with people or objects.
you need to be alert and aware of the working environment; as construction sites change on a minute by minute basis.
ability to follow a systematic pattern of instruction each time a vehicle/ item of plant is moved; to ensure they remain in full control of the situation.
ensure before any movement of a vehicle/item of plant takes place you need to ensure that the area is clear and that it is safe for the vehicle/item of plant.
at all times, you should observe the behaviours and actions of others within the area of operation, being attentive to the vehicle/plant operator and the wider environment.
plan in advance all access routes / changes to routes
regularly check the traffic management plan in conjunction with the construction phase plan, if and when necessary.
attend all traffic marshal(s) briefings for notification of changes to be made or recently made
assist plant and vehicle drivers to safely manoeuvre and reverse their plant or vehicle
prevent pedestrians from putting them at risk whilst a vehicle is being manoeuvred
direct plant or vehicle to prevent injury to people damage to property or materials and stop work if deemed unsafe
always position them in a place of safety
maintain eye contact with the plant or vehicle and give clear concise signals/ instructions

competency and training

must have good communication skills
ability to use hand signals
must have the capability to direct plant and vehicle movements
must have the understanding and knowledge where to be safely positioned
ability to understand and recognise the hazards of working around plant and vehicles
know the work area they have designated responsibility for
have undergone suitable and assed training
must have at least three years’ experience in a construction environment

training requirements

ideally current cpcs a73 vehicle and plant
npors traffic marshal ticket or equivelent
nvq level 2 plant
safety critical cert
