st bede’s and st joseph’s catholic college is a co-educational school, founded by the merger of the two catholic secondary schools in bradford; the boys school st bede’s catholic grammar school and the girls school st joseph’s catholic college.

we are looking for a sixth form pastoral support assistant to provide academic and pastoral support to students within the sixth form to improve attainment, achievement, attendance, behaviour and attitudes towards learning and to assist with academic and pastoral concerns.

the post holder will also provide general administrative support as required.

key responsibilities:

work with students to ensure that all post-16 students complete their courses.
develop and implement strategies to increase the overall alps score.
establish constructive relationships and communicate with other professionals, including outside agencies, to support the achievement and progress of students.
act as a point of first contact for parents and provide a focal point for student enquiries and concerns.
be aware of and comply with national and local policies and procedures relating to child protection and all aspects of safeguarding children.
act on results analysis, ensuring issues can be actioned.
provide administrative and organisation support.
assist with organising events, including parents information and meetings and attending parents evenings and year 13 results day e.g. giving out results to the students and guiding them to the tutors for clearing and other related activities.

liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers to ensure that students receive appropriate support and resources.
monitor student progress and record achievement.
support lesson planning and assess the development of students.
promote positive values, attitudes and good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour
manage an agreed caseload of referrals by implementing support activities according to student needs

you will work with post-16 students on a one-to-one basis or in groups to facilitate learning by:

helping students who are underperforming in their subjects outside the classroom, looking at any issues and what can be done to help.
encouraging students to interact with strategies to support self-esteem and confidence-building.
support students to resolve a range of issues that are creating barriers to learning.
proactively deal with minor/routine pastoral and behavioural issues.
drawing up agreed action plans sixth form progress leaders with students, outlining the aims of the mentoring.

qualifications and experience:

qualified to nqf (national qualification framework) level 3 in relevant or equivalent or equivalent experience.
gcse english and maths (a-c) or equivalent e.g. adult literacy/numeracy at level 2.
experience of working in a school or similar environment.
good understanding of the principles underpinning effective performance management.
good knowledge of it administration systems.
excellent communication skills - both written and verbal.
first aid qualification or willingness to undertake.
ability to motivate, develop, support staff.
demonstrable knowledge of the principles involved in giving advice and guidance to children/young people, including the place of confidentiality.
displays flexibility, adaptability, initiative and is solution focused.
