shift: 7:00am-3:00pm or 2:00pm-10:00pm (fri-sun) or 10:30pm-6:30am (3 days a week)

responsibilities for this telecommunications operator job include:

  • answers routine and emergency telephone calls (including tty calls) with thorough inquiry to choose correct connection.
  • provides prompt and courteous service a. to all callers.
  • pages and locates physicians and other persons within the hospital building using overhead voice paging or beepers accurately.
  • relays in-house messages accurately.
  • provides information to callers concerning clinic schedules, hospital extensions, visiting hours, and locations of facilities and services. when requested, provides location of patients and medical personnel. places telephone calls (local, long-distance and 800 numbers), making proper connection to individual or business requested; completes records (if applicable) to insure proper billing.
  • establishes multi-party conference calls as required.
  • responds promptly and courteously to the physician entrance.
  • provides physicians with temporary pagers if their pager is not functioning properly.
  • monitors keys to various departments within the hospital.
  • answers patient advocate line and dispatches calls accordingly.
  • answers overflow calls for departments such as, but not limited to, centralized scheduling, help desk, occupational medicine, and escort services.
  • answers and processes all answering service calls.
  • provides prompt and courteous service to all callers.
  • confirms physician on-call when the office closes.
  • takes accurate and complete messages per physician request for information.
  • pages out messages according to physician and/or client specifications.
  • delivers messages clearly and accurately.
  • patches physician calls accurately when requested.
  • performs a daily search for all non-delivered messages at end of shift.
  • faxes messages to the physician/answering service accounts upon request.
  • responds to all emergency codes, procedures, and alarms.
  • monitors the fireboard and alerts the appropriate personnel regarding specific location of the alarm and follow-up with the appropriate code procedure.
  • monitors cardiac arrest alarms, uses overhead and individual pagers to contact the code team and notifies the floor when the code has been completed.
  • monitors miscellaneous alarms within the hospital, including but not limited to, blood bank, surgery, maintenance, and the elevator system; dispatches protective services and/or environmental services as required.
  • alerts the appropriate staff of major traumas arriving in the emergency room (code green) and logs notification of arrival, the estimated time of arrival, and designated transport.
  • alerts appropriate staff of emergency cardiac cath lab (stemi) request, from physician or floor, using individual pagers to contact the team and notify the lead person when all members of the team have responded.
  • maintains a working knowledge of departmental emergency response operating procedures, including the use of each system utilized by the telecommunications operator.
  • maintains physician on-call schedule, physician availability and responds to physician posting requests.
  • accurately logs on-call information on system from client schedules.
  • completes daily back-up procedures, maintaining an accurate downtime file.
  • responds to physician requests for postings and rounding lists per each physicians’ personal instructions.
  • maintains physicians’ availability i.e. - vacation, cme, out of the office, etc.
  • completes all miscellaneous associated duties.
  • maintains on-call information and changing on-call roster of personnel including, those in various medical services, but not limited to, security, respiratory therapy, nursing supervisor, house residents, internists, and anesthetists.
  • maintains a back-up patient directory accurately.
  • responds promptly and courteously as back up to patient information
  • provides accurate directory assistance information to hospital staff.
  • responds to requests for hearing impaired phones and document’s location accurately e. (follow-up).
  • receives and dispatches bio-med calls after-hours.
  • reports to the telecommunications supervisor any change of hospital/answering service information (pagers, cell numbers, residence numbers, etc.).
  • maintains various logs in the communications department as necessary.
  • follows prescribed procedures when the communication system fails.
  • completes appropriate documentation of death notifications and contacts funeral homes.
  • 6. performs other duties as assigned.

     

    qualifications:

  • education: high school graduate.
  • experience: six (6) months of clerical or customer service. keyboarding experience. basic computer skills.
