as part of a friendly team of 12, you will have a dynamic role across our bookkeeping practice where you will troubleshoot, dive into client work where particular additional support and time is needed, handle short term or adhoc work, work with brand new clients to help them get their bookkeeping up to date and in good shape and a specific role for co-ordination for year end processes.

we are looking for someone with extensive bookkeeping experience using xero. an accounting qualification is very helpful but not essential.

we want to give you the autonomy to work from home and flexibly. in this particular role though, as you will be specifically providing cover for others when they are on leave, we will need to ask you to take your annual leave outside of school holidays.

the ability to attend the office on occasions to work with the team and attend team events. being based 45 minutes travel from hitchin is essential.

main responsibilities:

- carrying out bookkeeping processes effectively and accurately and in accordance with our processes and up to trial balance stage

- processing sales invoices and other types of income

- processing purchase invoices, receipts, expenses and other expenditure items

- ensuring items are correctly coded to the appropriate nominal

- bank reconciliations

- processing cis transactions and submitting cis returns as required

- vat reconciliation and preparing and submitting vat returns

- reviewing and providing monthly reporting

- completing year end checks and liaison with accountant

specific areas of responsibility will include:

- co-ordinating year end preparation work across the whole practice to ensure that year ends checks are completed and handed over

- for new clients, completing xero health checks and identifying any remedial work needed

- for new clients, completing remedial work and getting the work into good shape and process notes in place ready for handover

- providing bookkeeping services for clients which are short term in nature e.g. one off assignments, maternity cover, adhoc for sub-contracted accountants

- supporting other members of the team by keeping their work flowing whilst on leave

- setting up xero to meet client needs

- providing xero support and training for clients

- trouble shooting bookkeeping issues across the practice

what we are looking for:

experience and skills:

- comprehensive bookkeeping or accounting experience

- understanding and application of bookkeeping practices

- understanding of vat and cis requirements

- strong it skills

- significant experience of xero bookkeeping software
