job description:
the role is as a lead engineer based in the battery cell stack team within the battery design and release teams as part of the overall powertrain electrified engineering group. reporting to the mechanical system manager/ principal engineer, the lead engineer would be responsible for the delivery of the battery mechanical system, (including electrical componentry) to meet quality, cost, weight, timing and functional targets. as lead engineer you would lead a team of cad and design engineers to ensure the cad designs and drawings are completed with the correct level of integrity. further responsibility will be to operate in an agile environment as the group scrum master for the design and development of the system.
key responsibilities
focus on embedding agile principles, methods and practices.
facilitating showcases to maintain in-squad alignment and across group or domain as appropriate.
own the design and release of multiple parts with the hv battery across various battery programmes.
ensure robust timing plans are in place that achieves program milestones and targets (quality, cost, functionality, weight, and timing).
develop a product design specification and statement of requirements to support supplier sourcing and work with the matched pair through the gsp process
develop and release updates to engineering specifications.
ensure dfmea, design rules, rmdv, statement of work process/documents are diligently and transparently implemented in the design condition at the appropriate design maturity gateways.
lead issue resolution (aims/jira obstacles/impediments) and change management (wers), processes to ensure that all changes are implemented robustly and support programme objectives.
fully utilize the etag, (end of test battery strip process) from completed functional, rig and vehicle tests, along with warranty feedback to ensure proactive identification and resolution of component issues.
drive the resolution of cross functional technical / manufacturing issues using a global 8d process
lead suppliers through design phase, procurement of prototypes, production tooling and ensure components perform to requirements.
ownership of product engineering eapqp deliverable activities, status reporting and smart sheet management .
key point of contact for the cell stack team, working as part of the simultaneous engineering team to create a high value / feasible manufacturable design, using agile principles.
essential:
degree in relevant engineering discipline or 5 years relevant experience.
a knowledge of typical bev and phev battery system solutions and technologies.
experience of complex mechanical packaging and structural solutions.
experience of typical manufacturing solutions such as extrusions, mouldings, pressings and implications of manufacturing process on mechanical design.
experience of defining and/or using appropriate analysis tools to optimise and verify mechanical and structural properties such that you can define the required analysis.
understanding of typical battery characteristics - cell types, electrical configuration, cell mounting limitations, cooling and heating requirements, venting.
a working knowledge of the design and release process
strong people skills and the ability to work individually and in a cross functional team
excellent communication and presentation skills.
experience of meeting deadlines.
the ability to project manage designs to production and several parts across multiple vehicle programmes
experience of change management and a working knowledge of problem resolution techniques e.g. 8d
the ability to make effective decisions in the best interest of the business and customer
the ability to understand commodity timing plans (including design verification plans, programme plans and supplier timing plans)
experience of quality tools including design fmea's
experience of agile tools and methods including jira
