job description 

the successful candidate will be responsible for managing engineering efforts in the fabrication of advanced composite structures and components over a wide range of product lines and application sectors. this role involves working directly with structural and design engineers and chemists on multiple projects within the company.

this position will be responsible for managing the day-to-day technical efforts in new composite component fabrication projects, including necessary testing to ensure the completion of projects as efficiently and effectively as possible. knowledge of and a passion for composite materials and their processing methods is required. practical, hands-on experience in composite structure fabrication is a plus.

the composites engineer must be able to work independently and confidently with various project teams, using innovation and creativity, to solve technical processing problems. leading a technical team and making final technical decisions for the team is expected. communication of results to senior management and/or customers is required.

specific responsibilities of the position include: - providing technical direction for the development, design, and implementation of projects - leading composite fabrication builds of composite structures, both large and small - applying significant knowledge and experience of composite design, behavior, and composite fabrication to guide development and improve the design and performance of ctd products across all industries - working in a timely manner to identify and resolve processing issues and mitigate risks - recognizing problems or situations that are new and evaluating and/or finding solutions using a systematic, disciplined approach - working with and directing junior engineers and technicians in the performance of materials related r&d and product fabrication tasks - contributing to the writing of process specifications and travelers for the systematic fabrication and production of components and systems - leading and contributing to the daily activities of project teams to effect efficient performance and completion of projects - compiling data and writing technical reports, as well as other communication with senior management and/or customers, as required - working directly with the chief commercial and chief operating officers to develop customer requested quotations and supporting the writing of technical portions of proposals.

position requirements

• a minimum of a b.s. in mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or equivalent degree

• 8-10 years’ minimum experience in an engineering or materials related role • the candidate must be familiar with the design and performance of polymer materials, carbon fiber, glass fiber, and other reinforcements commonly used in the composite industry

• knowledge of and experience with composite materials and composite processing and fabrication methods

• the candidate must be responsible, self-motivated, and able to work closely with other engineers, technicians, and program managers

• organized and capable of tracking, managing, and resolving technical issues on multiple projects simultaneously

• excellent troubleshooting, problem identification, and problem resolution skills

• demonstrated track record of successful project or product delivery desired experience

• knowledge of and experience with composite materials and composite processing and fabrication methods

• composite materials design and layup

• basic polymer chemistry, formulation, and resin mixing

• tooling design • strong writing skills applied to reports, proposals, and specification documents

• experience managing teams to accomplish programmatic goals on schedule and on budget
