the team
our respected planning unit comprises nine full-time specialists handling planning obligations, appeals and all the advisory work required by gateley's clients, who include most of the top twenty housebuilders in the country. members of the team are based at birmingham, manchester, guildford and nottingham.
as well as advising on mainstream planning law, the team deals with related systems and practice areas such as compulsory purchase (alongside our internal infrastructure specialists gateley hamer), heritage law, environmental impact assessment, town/village greens, community infrastructure levy, and public rights of way.
partners andrew piatt (national head - manchester), robert waite (partner - nottingham), matthew scudamore (partner - birmingham), and keith lancaster (legal director - guildford), have many decades of experience of the planning system. the unit has a fantastic reputation for the quality of advice, guidance and representation it provides to all its clients both regionally and nationally.
the role
gateley now have a rare opportunity for a solicitor operating at associate level to join its southeast team. this role would be a hybrid opportunity and could be based in either our guildford or reading office. this is a hands-on role and will advise a variety of developers and housebuilders on, projects which have cover infrastructure, town centres, stadia, energy and waste, retail, residential, and infrastructure. for example:
acting for barnet council (in capacity as a joint venture development partner (in relation to the brent cross regeneration scheme; advising on planning, environmental, highways and compulsory purchase aspects of the project.
acting for a consortium comprised of some of the country's largest housebuilders in relation to a development in winchester involving the provision of 3,500 new homes.
this is a great opportunity to develop your legal career as a planning specialist working with household name residential developers and other clients across guildford, the south of england and beyond.
at gateley we will encourage you to take advantage of the wide range of training and guidance available to specialists in planning and related environmental law, as well as participating in giving training to others through our seminar programme for clients and contacts of the business. you will have day-to-day access and support from keith lancaster (planning legal director) as well as the partners and colleagues across the planning unit.
key skills & experience
ideally 3 years' pqe within planning law
a solid grounding in town and country planning legal work
outstanding experience drafting and negotiating s106, s38 and s278 highways agreements
excellent commercial acumen
strong attention to detail and organisational skills, and the ability to meet deadlines
excellent interpersonal skills
